What is Vertical Pod Autoscaler?

The Vertical Pod Autoscaler (VPA) is a Kubernetes resource that automatically adjusts the resource requests and limits of containers in a pod based on their actual usage. Unlike the Horizontal Pod Autoscaler, which adjusts the number of pods, the VPA focuses on resizing the resource allocation (CPU and memory) of individual pods to optimize performance and resource utilization.

How Does Vertical Pod Autoscaler Work?

VPA monitors the resource usage of pods and determines whether the current resource allocation is sufficient. If the resources are under-allocated (causing throttling) or over-allocated (wasting resources), VPA recommends or applies updated values for CPU and memory requests/limits.   • Auto: VPA automatically adjusts resource requests/limits and restarts pods if necessary to apply the changes.
